A Safer, Healthier North Ottawa Community Hospital: New Emergency Department Improves Experience, Efficiency
Earlier this summer, the North Ottawa Community Hospital’s newly renovated and expanded Emergency Department opened its doors for its first patient. That moment represented hundreds of hours of work between Enviah and North Ottawa and signaled the end of phase one of the renovation and expansion project.
The new, state-of-the-art ED enables North Ottawa to more meaningfully intersect with people’s lives. A greater number of exam rooms – all private – will allow more patients to be seen at one time. New technology allows for in-room education and new medical and testing protocols are in place for improved primary care and chronic disease management. Specially designed rooms, including two state-of the-art trauma rooms, and specialty rooms for gynecology, mental health, and infectious disease mean that North Ottawa is safer and healthier than even before.
Enviah, acting as the owner’s representative, lead consultant, and architect of record, helped design the new North Ottawa ED with the patient in mind. That’s why their goal is to see all patients within five minutes of their arrival to the hospital and have a plan of action in place for each patient within the first hour. The new ED will allow staff to provide better care – reinventing the patient experience, improving outcomes, and reducing misuse of the emergency room. Through a drive to teach the community to seek the right care, at the right time, and in the right place, the new ED will also make care more affordable.
Congratulations to North Ottawa Community Hospital as they continue to strive for a safer and healthier future for their community.
