The New Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital: Designed for the Patient

New environments can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially when a family member is recovering from an injury. When leaders at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. expanded and renovated the campus, the patient experience was at the forefront of the design. Enviah is proud to have played a role in the $66.4 million expansion, which is nearing completing. The new 200,00 square foot facility will be unveiled Oct. 13.

The new Mary Free Bed Experience starts the moment visitors enter the campus. A greeter directs you where to park and offers valet service for ease and convenience. Visitors are warmly greeted and step into an inviting space, with an open floor plan and tall ceilings, natural light, large glass sculptures and fountains.
While most hospitals have large check-in desks, Mary Free Bed instead offers kiosks designed for ease and efficiency. Registration technicians are also available to assist visitors through the check in process. The new main lobby also will include a small coffee bar and personal day lockers for patients and visitors.

To make the hospital experience more convenient, all services have been consolidated under one roof, including inpatient, outpatient, and all therapy services.

The first floor will feature outpatient services with specialized therapy gyms and treatment rooms, and a new Activities of Daily Living (ADL) apartment where outpatients can work on home-life skills. There will also be two new therapy pools.

The second floor will house Recreation Therapy, where patients can learn to regain their quality of life. The third floor will include a pediatric inpatient unit with 16 private rooms, 11 private adult patient rooms and specialized areas for physical, occupational and recreational therapy, child life activities, speech therapy and social work.

The adjacent professional building will house a new conference center and catering kitchen, hospital administration offices and various other hospital support offices.

With all these changes – and more – Mary Free Bed truly is offering the best experience for patients, families, and staff.
